Latest developments in Arab world's unrest (AP)

___

EGYPT

Partial results show the Muslim Brotherhood emerging as the biggest winner in Egypt's landmark parliamentary elections, and leaders of the once-banned Islamic group demand to form the next government, setting the stage for a possible confrontation with the ruling military. The generals who took power after the February fall of Hosni Mubarak say they will name the government, and the parliament would have no right to dissolve it.

___

SYRIA

The Arab League unveils a list of top Syrian officials facing a travel ban, and Turkey imposes tough new sanctions against Damascus as pressure intensifies for President Bashar Assad to end his regime's violent effort to suppress an 8-month-old uprising. The 17 officials who could be banned from traveling to other Arab countries include the defense and interior ministers, along with close members of Assad's inner circle.

___

YEMEN

Thousands of residents flee the central Yemen city of Taiz when government forces shell the city, killing one person, and two guards are shot dead in the south by Islamist militants. The violence rages despite longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh's agreement to step down. He has been the target of months of protests, and some units of his military have joined the rebels.

___

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

The United Arab Emirates is boosting state salaries and offering citizens other perks to mark the Gulf nation's 40th anniversary, following similar moves by other Arab countries to try to soften challenges by their increasingly restive populations. The UAE has not experienced the widespread popular uprisings of the Arab Spring, and the huge raises appeared to be at least in part an attempt by the government to keep it that way.

___

KUWAIT

Kuwait's ruler names a new prime minister amid mounting opposition protests over claims of high-level corruption. The official Kuwait News Agency says the emir selected Defense Minister Sheik Jaber Al Hamad Al Sabah for the post ? two days after the entire Cabinet resigned. Opposition groups have been pressing for the resignation of the long-serving prime minister, Sheik Nasser Al Mohammad Al Sabah, who is viewed by critics as trying to muzzle dissent. The new prime minister now must select a Cabinet.

TUNISIA

Tunisia's former dictator is convicted in absentia of torturing army officers and sentenced by a military court to five years in prison. Zine Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia Jan. 14 in the face of a popular uprising and now faces over 100 charges in civilian and military tribunals. He has already been convicted three times by civilian courts.

Top Marine says service embracing gay ban repeal (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Since the lifting two months ago of a longstanding U.S. ban on gays serving openly in the military, U.S. Marines across the globe have adapted smoothly and embraced the change, says their top officer, Gen. James F. Amos, who previously had argued against repealing the ban during wartime.

"I'm very pleased with how it has gone," Amos said in an Associated Press interview during a week-long trip that included four days in Afghanistan, where he held more than a dozen town hall-style meetings with Marines of virtually every rank. He was asked about a wide range of issues, from his view of the Marine Corps' future to more mundane matters such as why he recently decided to stop allowing Marines to wear their uniform with the sleeves rolled up.

Not once was he asked in Afghanistan about the repeal of the gay ban.

Nor did it come up when he fielded questions from Marines on board the USS Bataan warship in the Gulf of Aden on Saturday. On his final stop, in Bahrain on Sunday, one Marine broached the topic gently. He asked Amos whether he planned to change the Marines' current policy of leaving it to the discretion of local commanders to determine how to handle complaints about derogatory "homosexual remarks or actions." Amos said no.

The apparent absence of angst about gays serving openly in the Marines seemed to confirm Amos' view that the change has been taken in stride, without hurting the war effort.

In the AP interview, he offered an anecdote to make his point. He said that at the annual ball in Washington earlier this month celebrating the birth of the Marine Corps, a female Marine approached Amos's wife, Bonnie, and introduced herself and her lesbian partner.

"Bonnie just looked at them and said, `Happy birthday ball. This is great. Nice to meet you,'" Amos said. "That is happening throughout the Marine Corps."

Amos said he is aware of only one reported incident in Afghanistan thus far, and that turned out to be a false alarm. He said a blogger had written of a gay Marine being harassed by fellow Marines for his sexual orientation. In an ensuing investigation, the gay Marine denied he had been harassed.

A Defense Department spokeswoman, Cynthia O. Smith, said implementation of the repeal of the gay ban is proceeding smoothly across the military.

"We attribute this success to our comprehensive pre-repeal training program, combined with the continued close monitoring and enforcement of standards by our military leaders at all levels," Smith said.

In the months leading up to Congress's repeal, which took effect in September, there were indications that the change might not be embraced so readily.

During a visit to a Marine combat outpost in southern Afghanistan in June, then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates was confronted by an enlisted Marine who clearly objected to the repeal. He told Gates that the Marine Corps has "a set of standards and values that is better than that of the civilian sector," and that repeal of the gay ban has "changed those values."

He asked Gates whether Marines who object to serving with gays would be allowed to opt out of their enlistment. Gates said no and predicted that if pre-repeal training was done right, "nothing will change" with regard to rules of behavior and discipline.

That Marine was not alone in making known his doubts about the wisdom of allowing gays to serve openly in uniform. In a survey of military members last year, 45 percent of Marines viewed repeal negatively in terms of how it could affect combat readiness, effectiveness and cohesion. Among those Marines who serve in combat roles, 56 percent expressed that view.

It was those statistics that caused Amos concern prior to repeal, and he made known his position in no uncertain terms when he testified to Congress last December.

"Successfully implementing repeal and assimilating openly homosexual Marines into the tightly woven fabric of our combat units has strong potential for disruption at the small unit level as it will no doubt divert leadership attention away from an almost singular focus on preparing units for combat," Amos said at the time. He stressed then and later that if repeal were approved, Marines would faithfully follow the new law.

Looking back, Amos said in the AP interview that he had no regrets about publicly opposing repeal during wartime. He said he was obliged, as the commandant of the Marines, to set aside his personal opinions and represent the views of those combat Marines who told the survey "pretty unequivocally" that repeal was problematic.

"I think I did exactly what I should have done," he said.

Alienware M14xr3

The Alienware M14xr3 ($2,002.99 direct), as indicated by its 1.49?inch thick chassis and 6.38-pound weight, packs a roster of powerful parts that are rarely seen in a 14-inch laptop. It's filled to the brim with wireless features like integrated wireless HD (adapter included), Killer Wireless-N Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. And its Nvidia GPU and Core i7 processor are powerful enough to take on DirectX 11 games (on medium settings) and run through intensive multimedia tasks. Unfortunately, the amount of heat it emits is enough to qualify it as a mini space heater.

Design
Alienware laptops are made for gamers, which means the design has a "bling" factor. Two red grills glow on the bottom front of the chassis, and the keyboard also glows red (you can change the lighting within the Alienware Command Center). The keys are in the traditional style, rather than the isolated chiclet style that has become so popular among laptop manufacturers. These keys felt soft and springy under my fingers and provided one of the better typing experiences I've encountered on a laptop. The soft rubberized texture integrated into the palm rest?as well as the rest of the laptop?over its magnesium frame provided some traction while typing and adds to its unique design. The touchpad is made of plastic and provided a smooth navigating experience. The mouse buttons were quiet and easy to click.

The laptop's 14-inch widescreen displays in 1,600-by-900 resolution?a rare find. Most 14-inch laptops sport a 1,366 by 768 resolution, like the HP Envy 14 (Sandy Bridge) and Dell XPS 14z ($1,299 direct, 4 stars). And as mentioned before, most 14-inch laptops?and 15-inch laptops, for that matter?don't weigh over six pounds and support a chassis with such girth. The Sony VAIO VPC-SE16FX/S ($1,249.99 direct, 4 stars) (4.4 pounds), Asus N55SF-A1 ($1,249.99 list, 4 stars) (6.1 pounds), and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (late 2011) ($1,799 direct, 4 stars) (5.5 pounds)?all 15-inch laptops?weigh less than the M14xr3. Perhaps, if Alienware had dropped the slot-loading DVD drive in favor of lightening the load it would have made for a better traveling companion. But as it is, you'll probably want to consider something like the Alienware M11xr3 ($1,099 direct, 4 stars) if you're looking to game on the go.

Features
The M14xr3's huge price point largely comes from its added features, the Killer Wireless-N 1333 being one of the most important. This Wi-Fi card is able to stream up to 450Mbps, and its Advanced Stream Detect technology is able to intelligently classify and prioritize network traffic (e.g., streaming a movie vs. connecting to World of Warcraft). Other wireless features include Bluetooth for connecting peripherals and Wireless HD (WiHD) (a technology similar to that of Intel's WiDi), which transmits your computer's contents to an HDTV in 1080p. It can also stream protected content, like Blu-rays, just like WiDi 2.0. Alienware provides a receiver, instead of making you pay $100 extra for a Netgear Push2TV box ($99 list) as most WiDi-equipped laptops do. The M14xr3 also comes with all the right ports, including VGA, mini-DisplayPort, and HDMI video outputs, a USB 2.0 that doubles as a charging dock for your USB devices, two USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet jack, a multi-format card reader (MMC, SD, MS/Pro), and two headphone jacks and a microphone jack.

Its 750GB hard drive spins at a fast 7,200rpm?one of the fastest you can get on a laptop without resorting to a solid-state or flash memory drive. The hard drive is also the largest you can get in this size chassis. It should provide plenty of space to store all your games and files with room to spare; if not, you can always take advantage of the USB 3.0 port to transfer your files to an external hard drive.

Performance
Alienware M14xr3 The M14xr3 comes equipped with a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-2670QM processor, 8GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M (3GB) graphics chipset. It was able to play through all of our test games on medium settings and 1,024 by 768 resolution. It posted 58 frames per second (fps) on DirectX 9 Lost Planet 2; 77 fps on DirectX 10 Crysis; and 39 fps on DirectX 11 Lost Planet 2. However, the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Late 2011), running Boot Camp, managed better frame rates, with 81 fps in Crysis and 66.7 fps in Lost Planet 2. The MacBook Pro was also able to garner playable results in Lost Planet 2 (DX9) on its highest settings at native resolution (30.4fps), where the M14xr3 fell to 24.7 fps (13 fps in Crysis). The next laptop to come close to the M14xr3 in terms of gaming performance was the Asus N55SF-A1 (77.2 fps in Crysis and 55.3 fps in Lost Planet 2).

The M14xr3's high-powered parts are squeezed into a smaller chassis, which means that heat builds up faster. During game tests, the laptop's keyboard registered a temperature of 107.5 degrees, palm rest registered 96.5 degrees, and underside registered a sizzling 114 degrees Fahrenheit (as measured by our Fluke thermometer).

In day-to-day productivity tests, the M14xr3 was tops in PCMark 7 (2,749) compared with the MacBook Pro (2,235) and Asus N55SF-A1 (2,482). It encoded a video in Handbrake in 1 minute 30 seconds and completed our Photoshop CS5 script in 3:39?the same time it took for the MacBook Pro to complete both tests.

The M14xr3's 8-cell, 63Wh battery performed well, lasting 4 hours 18 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery test, thanks mainly to the Optimus technology integrated within the Nvidia graphics chip. Optimus is an automatic graphics-switching technology that flips between the discrete GPU for 3D-intensive tasks such as gaming and integrated graphics for routine applications. However, the Asus N55SF-A1's 56Wh battery (4:39) and MacBook Pro's 77.5Wh battery (5:26) lasted longer.

The Alienware M14xr3 is the middle child of the Alienware family. Its weight makes it better suited to a life as a desktop replacement, but if you're looking to go that route you might as well splurge for the Editors' Choice Alienware M17x (Sandy Bridge) ($2,254 direct, 4.5 stars), which provides better heat dissipation and has a bigger screen. Meanwhile, if you're looking to game on the road, you're better off leaning toward the Editors' Choice Alienware M11xr3. But if you can do without the expensive extras, like Killer Wireless-N Wi-Fi and Wireless HD, the Asus N55SF-A1 (which costs $753 less) and Editors' Choice Apple MacBook Pro (which costs $203 less) might be better options for a pure-performance gaming machine.

Trinidad "plot" arrests reach 13, but details scarce (Reuters)

PORT OF SPAIN (Reuters) ? The number of suspects detained in an alleged plot to assassinate Trinidad and Tobago's prime minister rose to 13, a top security official said on Monday while offering few new details about the conspiracy.

National Security Minister John Sandy faced intense questioning at a news conference from reporters pressing for more specifics since Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced on Thursday that officials had uncovered a plot.

The government's vague announcement and reluctance to provide more information has puzzled many in this twin-island Caribbean country, a leading oil and gas producer and the top supplier of liquefied natural gas to the United States.

Sandy said a total of 13 people had been detained in connection with the alleged assassination plot, including a police officer, two former police officers and an ex-Coast Guard member. Last week, police said nearly a dozen people had been rounded up.

None of the detainees have been shown publicly and officials have not said what evidence led to the arrests.

"What we have unearthed is real," Sandy said, but he gave no new information about the possible motives for the alleged conspiracy to assassinate the prime minister.

Persad-Bissessar, a former attorney general, said on Thursday the plot targeted her and three cabinet ministers.

She called it a planned reprisal by criminals angry over a state of emergency she declared three months ago to crack down on drug-related crime and gang activity in Trinidad and Tobago.

Sandy said Persad-Bissessar's decision to go public with the news that authorities had uncovered the plot was "because a lot of rumors were flying ... about a coup and things like that."

SURGING CRIME, FALTERING ECONOMY

But opposition figures have strongly questioned the government's assertion that a plot existed, saying the prime minister wants to use it as a pretext to extend the state of emergency, which is set to expire on December 5.

"The government ... has come up with this story about an assassination plot, which cannot stand public scrutiny," opposition leader Keith Rowley said.

"The government's action is hysterical, political expediency," he added in comments published over the weekend.

Many ordinary Trinidadians have also expressed doubt, suggesting Persad-Bissessar may be trying to shore up political support at a time when her government has been struggling to revive a faltering economy.

Trinidad and Tobago has been seeking to attract fresh foreign investors, especially in the strategic energy sector.

In declaring the anti-crime emergency in August, Persad-Bissessar cited a surge in murders and other violent activity linked to the drugs trade.

Located just seven miles off the coast of Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago has become a trans-shipment point for South American drugs headed to Europe and the United States.

Sandy appeared to suggest drug activity was proving an increasing problem for the government.

"I think we need to take cognizance of the fact that Trinidad and Tobago, because of where we sit geographically, has lent itself to a number of issues," he said. "I think we need to be a bit more serious about some of the things that happen around us."

Lil Boosie Sentenced To Eight Years In Prison

Louisiana rapper pleaded guilty to drug-smuggling charges.

Lil Boosie has been incarcerated since June 2010, awaiting trial for a murder charge. On Tuesday (November 29), the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native (born Torrence Hatch) pleaded guilty to three counts of conspiring to smuggle drugs into prison and was sentenced to eight years behind bars.

Local TV station WFAB reports that District Judge Mike Erwin passed down the sentence after Boosie admitted that he tried to smuggle drugs into Louisiana's Dixon Correctional Center and Angola State Penitentiary. Upon hearing his sentence, the 29-year-old rapper requested admittance to a drug rehab program, and while the judge agreed to recommend treatment, he wouldn't order it. Boosie will receive credit for the time he has already served behind bars.

Last June, Boosie pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder, two counts of conspiracy to introduce contraband into a penal institution, three counts of possession with intent to distribute narcotics and three counts of conspiracy to commit possession with intent to distribute narcotics.

The first-degree murder charge stemmed from the October 2009 death of Terry Boyd. Boosie is accused of paying hit men to kill the 35-year-old man and, if convicted, he may face the death penalty. During Boosie's stint behind bars, the East Baton Rouge DA's office also began to build another case against Boosie, trying to link him to five additional murders.

During a prison interview in May, the Trill Entertainment rapper told XXL magazine he was being unfairly targeted by the justice system. "[I'm here] 'cause of the songs I made, before I was indicted, about the police in Baton Rouge and what's going on here," he said. "There's a lot with our record label that the system don't like. ... They took my hard drive out of my house after I got arrested. I have albums for days in there. They still haven't returned it. They've had it for damn near a year now. I need that music."

CHICAGO In a new study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), growth hormone replacement for six months was found to increase bone formation in abdominally obese women.

"This is the first time that the effects of growth hormone on bone have been studied in obesity," said the study's lead author, Miriam A. Bredella, M.D., a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. "Growth hormone is extremely important for bone health, and women with increased belly fat have weaker bones and reduced growth hormone levels."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately one-third (33.8 percent) of U.S. adults are obese. The CDC defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. Obesity is associated with many health problems, including cardiovascular and joint diseases, diabetes, high cholesterol, asthma and sleep apnea.

In a previous study, Dr. Bredella found that women with excess abdominal fat were at increased risk for bone loss. For this study, the researchers set out to determine if administration of growth hormone would increase bone formation.

Seventy-nine premenopausal, abdominally obese women with a mean age of 36 and a mean BMI of 35 participated in the six-month, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Each woman underwent an MR spectroscopy exam to evaluate bone marrow fat. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Abdominal fat and thigh muscle area were assessed with computed tomography (CT). Baseline measurements were compared with follow-up results at six months to determine change.

The baseline measurements showed that 32 percent of the women had osteopenia and one woman had osteoporosis. After six months, women who had received growth hormone showed increased bone formation, increased bone marrow fat and muscle mass, and higher levels of Vitamin D. They also exhibited a loss in abdominal fat compared to the placebo group. Women with the most abdominal fat loss had greater increases in bone formation.

"In addition to bone formation, our results also showed that growth hormone increases muscle mass, decreases belly fat and lowers cardiovascular risk markers, such as cholesterol and C-reactive protein," Dr. Bredella said.

According to Dr. Bredella, the risks are minimal, and this therapy could also be applied to non-obese and postmenopausal women. "As aging is associated with reduced growth hormone secretion, this could be a potential therapy for postmenopausal osteoporosis," she said.
